Guidelines for Obtaining Permission to Use SAE Copyrighted Material
Photocopying or republishing SAE copyrighted material in another work, in whole or part, without written permission is strictly prohibited.
Permission and fees to photocopy or republish SAE publications (in any format) may be obtained by mailing, emailing, or faxing a written request to:

Please note that all requests for permission must be in writing. We do not grant verbal permission unless a written request has been received.

1. Request to Photocopy SAE Material
The following information must be provided with your written request to photocopy material from an SAE publication:
- Title and SAE publication number
- Edition number (if applicable)
- Copyright year
- Exact material, including page or figure numbers, for which permission is requested
- Number of copies you intend to make
- Purpose of reproduction; for classroom use include the school, professor, course, and semester
- To whom the material will be distributed, and the cost (if applicable)
- Territory in which the copies will be distributed
2. Requests to Use SAE Material (in whole or part) in Another Work
The following information must be provided in your written request to use material from an SAE publication for republication in another work:
- Title and SAE publication number, Edition number, and Copyright year
- Exact material, including page or figure numbers, for which permission is being requested (If not using the entire SAE publication - please estimate the percentage of the SAE publication you will be using in your new work)
- Author(s) and title of the new work in which the SAE material will appear
- Publisher and publication date of the new work in which the SAE material will appear
- Intended audience for the new work
- Approximate page count and approximate list price of the new work
- Format/media of the new work (ie, print, electronic, etc.)
- Circulation/print run of the new work
- If including this material in a seminar/presentation, include the number of attendees (if ongoing - include estimate for the year). Also include the cost to attend this seminar.
- Territory and languages in which the new work will be distributed
3. Requests to post material on website (note: SAE does not allow posting of SAE standards on a public website)
Please provide the following information:
- Title of the SAE publication, ISBN number and SAE publication number
- If material is from a magazine, include the title of the article, page number, magazine volume and issue
- Copyright year
- Internal and/or external site - if internal site, include the number of employees accessing site
- Website address
4. Requests to reprint SAE Material in a PhD Thesis or Dissertation
- Title, Publication number, Edition number, and Copyright year of SAE publication
- Exact material, including page or figure numbers, for which permission is requested
- Title of Thesis/Dissertation
- Name of school
- Number of copies to be distributed, and to whom
- Format/media (print, electronic, etc.)
- Expected publication date
SAE grants permission for one-time use only. New requests are required for subsequent editions, for reprints or excerpts, or for other uses of the material.
SAE processes permission requests within four to six weeks of receiving a written request that includes the required information.
