Service Technology Program Office

Service Technology Definition

Vehicle service is a critical component in the product life cycle of ground vehicles. Service employs a host of technologies and is directly related to those found in the design, manufacture and operation of vehicles. For the purpose of this initiative, the term "service technology" applies to all things that are technical and have a relationship with the service and maintenance of vehicles.

STPO Scope

The Service Technology Program Office (STPO) of SAE International will provide focus and coordination for activities, policy recommendations, and products in ground vehicle service, maintenance and repair technologies. The STPO will be a valued and leading edge technical resource for OEMs and the vehicle service/maintenance industry. Products would be focused on the needs of those people involved in serviceability and maintainability of vehicles, and the development of a broad network of professionals involved in this field, including engineering and service delivery functions.

STPO Objectives

  • To influence and impact vehicle service technology by using SAE resources;
  • To build a base of loyal customers and members;
  • To identify and integrate all areas within the staff and volunteer structures of SAE that fit into service technology functions;
  • To provide current and future customers with a clearly defined entrance into SAE activities that involves service technology issues.
  • Provide strategic external input to the Board of Directors of SAE on trends and issues in service technology.
  • Foster communications and collaboration between engineering and service professionals;
  • To provide focus for SAE activities and products related to vehicle service.

STPO Customer

The STPO will be of interest to those professionals who have a responsibility for improving the reliability and durability of products throughout service life. They include field service engineers and technicians, systems engineers, researchers, consultants, research lab technicians, writers, educators, product designers, fleet managers, service executives, service product developers, policy makers, and others involved in advancing service technology.

STPO Process

  • Hold STPO meetings as required with at least one face-to-face meeting a year. More interactions via other mechanisms (phone, web forums, fax, e-mail, and video conferences) are encouraged.
  • Provide input into SAE Structure and SAE Board of Directors through reports.
  • When appropriate work with staff to develop products and services in response to industry needs within SAE's scope and mission.
