SAE Aerospace Standards
SAE Aerospace realized its birth in 1916, when the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics, National Bureau of Standards and Industrial Preparedness Committee of the Naval Consulting Board recognized the need to address aeronautical issues through an established organization such as SAE. Therefore SAE expanded its charter to address aerospace, paving the way for its merger with the American Society of Aeronautical Engineers in September 1916. Over the years, many aviation pioneers became active SAE Members such as Orville Wright, Glenn Curtiss, Glenn Martin, Elmer Sperry Chance Vought, Jimmy Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Kelly Johnson, and Igor Sikorsky.
SAE is the world's largest developer of aerospace consensus standards. SAE has over 6000 active aerospace standards that address aerospace materials, components, electrical systems, mechanical and fluid systems, propulsion systems, avionics, landing gear, lightning, etc. The program has over 7000 volunteers participating on more than 250 committees, subcommittees, and task groups.
SAE has worked with DOD, AIA, NAVAIR, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to convert more than 1500 military specifications. The relationship has since grown, with the DOD adopting more documents from SAE than from any other standards development organization.
