Developing a simulator for hot-gas-ingestion testing

Hot-gas ingestion (HGI) is of high importance for jet-powered vertical lift aircraft, noted researchers from BAE Systems, Cambridge University, and Microjet Engineering. The ingestion of hot exhaust gases into turbomachinery leads to a reduction of maximum available thrust, while the distribution of temperature around the engine face can lead to a reduction of compressor stability. Depending on the level of ingestion, the reduction of maximum available thrust can normally be managed. However, if the engine is already at maximum thrust, or in high ambient temperature conditions, any ingestion will be a problem—i.e., HGI becomes a problem at exactly the conditions where maximum thrust is needed.
