Technology update
Orenda-powered Air Tractor 401

Another introduction made at EAA's AirVenture 2000 was an Orenda-powered Air Tractor 401. The aircraft was first shown at the National Agricultural Aviation Association's annual convention in Reno in late 1999. As a result of strong market interest, Orenda will certify its engines for both the 301 and 401 Air Tractor models. The Supplemental Type Certificates are expected late this year.

According to the company, its OE600A V8 aero engine provides the Air Tractor with instantaneous throttle response, which will enhance maneuverability and performance on takeoff, climb, and in flight. The company expects fuel consumption for its engine to be 25% better than the 1340 radial it replaces and as much as 50% better than equivalent power turbine alternatives.

Another aircraft set to power the Orenda engine is the Explorer 500R, a multirole single-utility aircraft. Engine installation in a prototype model is expected to begin early next year with aircraft deliveries scheduled for 2004. The aircraft features a carbon-fiber fuselage and a unique retractable undercarriage. With low-drag wheel pods and a fairing under the fuselage, the aircraft was designed to allow a high cruise speed without cutting into the flat cabin floor.

The first certified Orenda-powered aircraft, the DHC-3 deHavilland Otter entered into commercial service in March.
