CAD software integration
Unigraphics modules support all facets of product development

Seamless integration has also made its way into Unigraphics Solutions' CAD software. The software package offers many solutions that link CAD to CAM, CAE, and PDM modules.

UG/Gateway is the infrastructure that links all modules in an easy-to-use motif-based environment. It supports key operations including opening existing or creating new part files, plotting drawings and screen layouts as well as importing and exporting computer graphics metafiles. Layer control, view definitions, screen layouts, object information and analysis, display control, help system, blank/unblank objects, and solid and surface shading are provided. The module also offers a state-of-the-art spreadsheet application. UG/Gateway is the core that links all other Unigraphics applications.

UG/Gateway serves as the infrastructure for linking all Unigraphics modules into an easy-to-use Motif-based environment.

Combining high-speed rendering and clearance analysis, UG/Advanced Assemblies provides data loading controls that allow users to filter the assembly structure.

UG/Freeform modeling allows for the design of complex freeform shapes like airfoils. It forms the basis for merging both solid and surface modeling techniques into one set of tools.

Constraint-based feature modeling and explicit geometric modeling are seamlessly integrated using UG/Solid Modeling. Engineers can take advantage of traditional solid, surface, and wireframe functionality integrated within an advanced feature-based environment.

UG/Features Modeling raises the level of expression so that designs can be defined in terms of engineering features, providing support for the creation and editing of standard design features including several varieties of holes, slots, pockets, pads, and bosses, as well as a full set of cylinders, blocks, cones, spheres, tubes, rods, blends, and chamfers. Features can be located relative to any other feature or object and can be instanced to establish associated sets either located individually or in simple patterns and arrays.

Design of complex freeform shapes such as airfoils and manifolds as well as industrial-designed products can be accomplished using UG/Freeform. This module forms the basis for a unique merging of both solid and surface modeling techniques into a single powerful set of tools. These models are fully integrated with all other UG functions and modules.

Providing a concurrent top-down product development approach, UG/Assembly's master models can be designed and edited in the context of the overall assembly. Components are flexibly mated or positioned and are associative, improving performance and reducing storage requirements. The architecture allows extremely large product structures to be created and shared by a design team, enabling members to keep their work current with others continually. To achieve a full digital mockup process for the layout of complex products, UG/Advanced Assemblies can be used to manage, share, and evaluate the digital models.

Engineers can make production drawings from solid models using UG/Drafting, which creates dimensions that are associated with the geometric model, ensuring that they are updated on a model change and reducing the time required for drawing updates. Assembly drawings are made easily using the assembly information created by the UG/Assembly module. UG/Geometric Tolerancing provides the foundation for dimensional engineering and variational analysis by enabling the intelligent definition of the geometric tolerance specification as fully associative to the model.

UG/CAM Base provides the infrastructure that links all machining modules with common capabilities in a simple Motif-based environment. This base module allows users to edit tool paths graphically by observing the tool as it moves and to perform graphical changes such as extending, shortening, or modifying the path. It also includes general-purpose point-to-point operations routines for tasks such as drilling, tapping, and boring. Other CAM modules include UG/Postprocessing, UG/Lathe, UG/Planar Milling, UG/Core & Cavity Milling, UG/Fixed-Axis Milling, UG/Variable-Axis Milling, UG/Sequential Milling, and UG/Wire EDM.

Based on the selected tolerancing standard such as ANSI Y14.5M-1982, ASME Y14.5M-1994, or ISO 1101-1983, the UG/Geometric Tolerancing module supports the quick and easy creation, editing, and inquiry of datums and tolerances.

An associative, intuitive CAE tool called UG/Scenario for FEA enables rapid pre- and postprocessing of Unigraphics parts and assemblies. This solution is used to evaluate the performance of various design alternatives or 'scenarios' as an integral part of the design process. The module can transform a geometric model into a finite element model and graphically display the simulation results. It can also be used for linear static, modal, and steady-state thermal analysis.

UG/GenConnect allows users to enter modeling parameters in the form of geometry selections or menu entries. Based on these parameters, a product structure is defined and optimized for factors such as cost, weight, and manufacturability. The complete product data structure can then be transferred to a Unigraphics part. When product specifications change, the rules defining the structure will automatically reflect other necessary changes.

Product data management and coordination can be accessed or performed by teams of people using UG/Manager. This module is fully integrated with UG/Assembly Modeling. When combined with UG/Solid Modeling and UG/Feature Modeling, it can deliver a tightly managed design environment that supports the concurrent engineering process.

The company also offers data exchange packages that allow its software to work with other product development software such as STEP, DXF, CATIA, and IGES. This allows virtual product development to occur across the internal and extended customer/supplier programs.
