Motorola rolls out direct tire pressure sensor
Congress and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are demanding that automakers implement tire-pressure monitoring, phasing in sensors beginning this fall. Component providers are racing to develop electronics that provide high accuracy and long lifetimes, sending wireless transmission from inside the tire. After the recent Ford/Firestone situation, legislation called on carmakers to phase in the technology until all cars must have the sensors by the fall of 2006. Most tire-monitoring systems meeting the 10% mandate for this model year check tires indirectly by monitoring tire rotation, often leveraging the processing power in antilock braking systems.
