Siemens develops color HUD for 5 Series

One of the many innovations on the all-new 2004 BMW 5 Series is the option of a headup display in conjunction with navigation. Important information is displayed in color on a 6 x 3 in (150 x 75 mm) field in the windshield. A virtual image is projected from the top of the instrument panel in line with the end of the hood in the driver's line of sight, necessitating little diversion of attention from the road ahead. Via the iDrive monitor and controller, the driver decides what information is to be shown, and its brightness. The display can be turned on and off via a switch in the lighting control panel to the left of the steering column.
