NAIAS Highlights: Concepts
GMC's transformable Terracross
The GMC Terracross SUV is part pickup and part five-seat convertible. At 4370 mm (172 in) long, it features minimal overhangs, a unique three-panel sliding glass roof, a reconfigurable midgate, and gliding rear doors. Unibody construction allows the floor of the Terracross to be lower than in traditional SUVs. A 3.4-L, 138-kW (185-hp) V6 engine is transversely mounted and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Running gear includes a VersaTrak all-wheel-drive system, which automatically delivers torque to the wheels with the most grip.
The roof's three glass segments can be moved electronically to various positions and can stack on top of one another, opening up to two-thirds of the entire roof length. The midgate, with its retractable rear window, is integrated into the second seat row backrest and can be flipped forward and stowed flush with the seat, creating an extended, flat cargo floor. When upright, with the window up and two roof segments closed above the seat rows, the midgate provides a closed passenger compartment with an open cargo box for transporting bulky items. A unique hinge system allows the rear doors to glide rearward, parallel to the sides of the vehicle. Combined with conventional front doors and no B-pillars, this provides open interior access.
Inside, the front passenger seat swivels, allowing the interior to be reconfigured. A reconfigurable color instrument cluster allows the display of information in dozens of different ways. The latest version of OnStar is part of the concept, while the sound system can play radio, tapes, CDs, and digital music files using a Sony Memory Stick.
