NAIAS Highlights: Concepts

The return of the Z

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is reviving its Z heritage with a front-engine/rear-wheel-drive two-seater that will go from 0 to 98 km/h (0 to 60 mph) in less than 6 s, but won't hit the road until mid-2002 as a 2003 model. The 3.5-L six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts comes from the VQ series and will generate an estimated 194+ kW ( 260+ hp). A six-speed manual and a five-speed automatic transmission are planned.

With a long wheelbase and wide stance, the car displayed at the auto show is described by Nissan as "near-production." Independent suspension is used front and back. The raised rear deck of the hatchback body is beneficial to aerodynamics, eliminating the need for an external or articulated spoiler. The hatchback design is accentuated by functional storage space and an integrated aluminum rear suspension strut tower brace, which is finished to match the rest of the rear compartment. In addition to the hatchback, a convertible version is planned.

The top half of the front seatbacks fold forward for easy access to the rear storage compartment, which features dual opening lids.

The design of the new Z was an international effort, with contributions from Nissan design studios in Japan and the U.S. to a concept developed at Nissan Design America.
