SEAT Formula
-
SEAT's Formula roadster is based on the VW Golf platform and is meant to give the company a sportier image. The Formula uses aluminum extensively and has a mass of about 900 kg (1980 lb). The car engine is mid-mounted, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox. The driver can use Formula 1-style paddles to change gear or use a floor-mounted shift. The turbocharged power unit is a 2.0-L four-cylinder producing 180 kW (240 hp), which should mean a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 5 s or a shade less. It is a derivative of SEAT's Cordoba World Rally car, but with 20-valve technology. Double wishbones are used for the suspension front and rear, coupled to horizontally mounted Penske shock absorbers. A retractable rear spoiler improves downforce and adjustable intakes cool the brakes. The car has a removable roof panel that can be stored on board. The Formula is the work of a team led by British designer Julian Thomson, working at the Design Center Europe at Sitges, a facility shared by SEAT, VW, and Audi.
