Bugatti EB 118

Italdesign took the wraps off the four-wheel-drive Bugatti EB 118 Coupe at the Paris Motor Show. Described as a "study" commissioned by VW, it could signal the way to future production models. VW boss Dr. Ferdinand Pi'ch is said to be behind the complex, 6.3-L engine project, believed to be the first 18-cylinder power unit used in a passenger car. It has three banks of six cylinders. The engine uses direct gasoline injection and puts out 408 kW (547 hp) and 650 N•m (480 lb•ft) of torque. The bore is 76.5 mm (3.01 in.), with a stroke of 75.6 mm (2.98 in.) and a compression ratio 11.5:1. The form of the engine, in 2 x 60° W configuration, has been chosen to provide a combination of low noise and compact overall dimensions.

The power flow from the input shaft to the gearbox was designed to keep vibration to a minimum. The engine has dry sump lubrication with a 10-L oil reservoir in the crankcase. Drive from the crankshaft is off the center of the engine, as is the drive to the camshaft. The front-axle differential, with its own hypoid final drive oil reservoir, is also integrated in a union of the crankcase and sump. The engine has a dry mass of 315 kg (693 lb).

The EB 118 coupe echoes styling elements of the EB112 sedan shown five years ago. It has the distinctive Bugatti horseshoe radiator and classic fastback styling with prominent "shoulders" over the rear wheels. There are triple headlights behind glass panels. The car has a ridge that starts at the top of the radiator grille and runs back across the hood and roof to taper away in the middle of the trunk lid. A rear spoiler rises automatically at 120 km/h (75 mi/h). The EB 118's interior mixes 1930s tradition—walnut and leather for the dashboard—with modern design and aluminum detailing. It has three oval instruments. The EB 118's dimensions include a length of 5050 mm (199 in.), width of 1990 mm (78 in.), and height of 1420 mm (56 in.).
