Global Concepts
Edited by Kevin Jost, Associate Editor
There are general rules about concept cars. Sometimes one will appear at an international motor show and it is clear that, with a few refinements and detail changes, it is set for production. Often concepts are shown to surprise, shock, amuse, or simply demonstrate the cerebral agility of a company's design staff. Elements of such concepts may one day appear in production but certainly not the whole thing.

The past year saw concepts introduced at a number of international exhibitions. At the 67th Turin International Car Exhibition—the kickoff of exhibitions in Spring 1998—automotive design was in the spotlight. The event was punctuated by the 3rd International Forum on Car Design and the concept car spotlights were directed at the Pininfarina Dardo, Fioravanti F100, Stola Abarth Monotipo 98, Italdesign Structura, Maggiora Citymagg all from design houses and the Dialogos from Lancia.

Turin was followed in October 1998 by the Paris and Birmingham Motor Shows, where concept vehicles included the Renault Vel Satis, Bugatti EB 118, Citroen C3, Jaguar XK 180, Nissan KYXX, and Lotus Elise 340R made their debuts.

One of the central themes of the concepts at the 1999 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) was a return to the past, with companies borrowing styling and/or reviving classic nameplates. New concepts included the Ford Thunderbird, Dodge Charger R/T and Power Wagon, Pontiac GTO, and Chevrolet Nomad — all updated for the late 1990s and beyond. However, trucks with greater versatility also figured prominently in the event, with the Oldsmobile Recon, Pontiac Aztek, and Nissan SUT.

The following pages highlight these and other concept vehicles that took center stage during the past year.
