Mercedes-Benz is adding a V6 version to its SLK two-seat folding-hardtop roadster range. The three-valve-per-cylinder 3.2-L engine is allied to a new six-speed manual gearbox, although a five-speed auto with one-touch gear change is optional. The engine is used in other Mercedes models and produces 163 kW (218 hp). Performance figures include a 0-100 km/h time of 7 s with a 245-km/h (152-mph) top speed.
The entry-level SLK 200 will now be offered in supercharged form, producing 120 kW (163 hp). The supercharged SLK 230's power is upped slightly to 145 kW (197 hp). The two four cylinder units have been revised. Changes include modified cylinder head with flow-optimized intake and outlet ports and integrated high-performance twin-spark ignition coils.
The short-throw close-ratio six-speed gearbox will be standard across the range as will suspension changes including a stiffer anti-roll bar, revised shock absorber settings, reduced spring travel, and a lowered body. All SLKs get ESP (Electronic Stability Program). The fuel tank is enlarged by more than 10%. Minor styling changes were also made to the SLK range.
