Panda turns 20
-

There are few cars that have a production run of 20 years without radical restyling and mechanical changes; the simple, boxy Fiat Panda is an exception. Styled by Giorgio Giugiaro, the Panda was launched in two-wheel-drive form in 1980 and as a 4x4 in 1983.
Sales have now topped
4 million and production last year was 130,000. Fiat
introduced the Panda as a cheap-to-buy-and-run small car. By 1986 it was available with a choice of 0.750 and 1.0-L engines, with a battery-powered version appearing in 1990. An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission was also offered.
