Restyled Corolla

Numerous refinements to exterior styling give the Toyota Corolla what the company says is a more expressive and aggressive image. The exterior has been enhanced with a new front fascia that features aerodynamic multi-reflector halogen four-beam headlights, chrome-plated trim, and a lowered front bumper. New taillights with round reverse lamps match the circular high-beam lights for a consistent overall appearance. Color-keyed body side moldings on select models contribute to a clean, flush exterior.

Interior enhancements include new seat fabrics and push-button air recirculation control. The LE model has a rearview mirror with integrated map lights.

All Corolla models are powered by an in-line four-cylinder, 1.8-L, 16-valve, DOHC all-aluminum engine with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) technology. The engine produces 93 kW (125 hp) at 5800 rpm and 170 N¥m (125 lb¥ft) of torque at 4000 rpm, and enables the Corolla to be certified at a low-emissions vehicle (LEV). Models equipped with the five-speed manual transmission deliver an EPA highway mileage of 5.7 L/100 km (41 mpg), while models with the four-speed automatic carry a highway mileage estimate of 6.0 L/100 km (39 mpg).

The 2001 Corolla is the first Toyota model to offer a safety inside-truck release. Additional safety features include side door impact beams and front and rear energy absorbing crumple zones. All U.S. market Corollas are built at New United Motor Manufacturing in Fremont, CA, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada in Cambridge, Ontario.
