Compact Chrysler Java
-
Chrysler chose the Frankfurt Motor Show to reveal a design study of a compact car for Europe. Called the Java, it signals Chrysler's ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in Europe, already well established via Jeep and to a lesser degree with the Chrysler Neon. It is the first time that Chrysler has created a small concept car specifically with the European market in mind, although the company insists that it is just a design study and that there are no production plans. However, it adds that Java includes design cues that could be incorporated in a future production model. The concept is the responsibility of Daimler-Chrysler's Pacifica Advanced Product Design Center at Carlsbad, CA.
The German element of the company was also involved in the project. Powertrain, trans-axle, and suspension are all "European-based Daimler-Chrysler components," according to the company (i.e., Mercedes-Benz). Power unit is a 1.4-L producing 60 kW (80 hp) and 130 N•m (95 lb•ft) or torque. Front suspension includes wishbones, MacPherson struts, double-tube shock absorbers, and a torsion bar stabilizer. At the rear are trailing links, with coil springs, single tube shock absorbers, and a torsion bar stabilizer.
The company calls the Java a "passenger priority design," with the most made of packaging. With an overall length of only 3770 mm (148.5 in), Java is said to have an interior package comparable to that of the considerably larger Chrysler PT Cruiser. Chrysler describes the Java as having "tall architecture and panoramic seating" the rear passengers sit slightly higher than those in front. The windshield is positioned in cabin-forward fashion.
