Peugeot's 607

Peugeot's new large sedan, the 607, was revealed shortly before the Frankfurt Motor Show. Technology plays a major part in its design and equipment, which includes automatic illumination of the hazard warning lights under hard braking, and a nine-setting suspension system for improved compromise between comfort and control. The car also has electronic sensors to detect tire-pressure loss, curtain airbags to protect the heads of occupants in an accident, an electronic stability program (ESP), laminated side windows, and a combined radio/mobile telephone system.

The 607 is a four-door sedan with an overall length of 4.9 m (16 ft) on a 2.8-m (9.2-ft) wheelbase. Peugeot put the 607 design through a weight-saving program; the bodyshell has a 285-kg (627-lb) mass and uses aluminum outer and inner hood panels. Peugeot says the car is to feature three new engines: a 2.2-L gasoline unit producing 116 kW (160 hp); a 2.2-L, common-rail high-pressure direct-injection turbo diesel with 98 kW (139 hp); and a 3.0-L gasoline unit producing 152 kW (210 hp).
