A PVC-reduced Honda Civic interior



The 2001 Honda Civic features a TPO-skinned laminate lower instrument panel manufactured out of material supplied by PolyOne Engineered Films Group.

The new Civic is produced by Honda of America Manufacturing in its East Liberty, OH, assembly plant, and the Civic's instrument panel is assembled in Honda America's plastics facility in Marysville, OH, out of a thermoplastic olefin (TPO) laminate from PolyOne Engineered Films Group, formerly Geon Engineered Films.

"This is the first U.S.-produced, calendered TPO bilaminate to be used as an instrument panel cover for a North American production vehicle," said James D. Ford, Automotive Business Manager at PolyOne. Other TPO products have involved a trilaminate process. According to Ford, products made from TPO are expected to gradually begin replacing the traditional PVC constructions in automotive interiors, primarily because of TPO's weight savings, improved durability, and ease of recycling. "This is especially true of the new class of polyolefin foam laminates, which until now could be disposed of only by landfill."

The TPO-skinned foam laminate construction is made of chemically compatible components and will be reusable in a variety of applications. The launch of the new product is the culmination of two years of cooperation between the Winchester, VA-based PolyOne; its technical partner in Japan, Tatsuta Chemical Co. Ltd.; and Honda's manufacturing, engineering, and R&D groups in the U.S. and Japan.


Multi-Flex TPE, supplied by Multibase, replaces PVC on the Civic's armrest.

Honda has also taken other steps to eliminate PVC from its interiors. The company selected Multi-Flex TPE MR for the armrest of the new Civic. The material is supplied by Chippewa Lake, OH-based Multibase, Inc., a custom compounder of engineered thermoplastics and elastomers. Multi-Flex offers enhanced scratch resistance and surface appearance without additional treatment or painting. It also required minimal mold adjustment when converting from PVC.

Electrically active composite from LNP


DaimlerChrysler eliminated a ground strap on its Jeep Wrangler through the use of a new statically dissipative composite from LNP Engineering Plastics.

The original design of the Jeep Wrangler's fuel-filler tube required the addition of a stainless steel strap on the underside of the vehicle to ground electrostatic discharge during fueling. By switching to a statically dissipative composite material for the fuel filler tube housing, DaimlerChrysler was able to eliminate the strap and ground the tube directly through the plastic housing. The material was Stat-Kon M1-H1 UV, a high-impact polypropylene composite from LNP Engineering Plastics.

"Switching to Stat-Kon M1-H1 for the housing meant we could reduce our cost by eliminating the expensive ground strap," said Nancy Isles, Project Engineer for the Wrangler. "With the new composite, we don't have to attach the ground strap because the fill tube is grounded directly through the housing. Any time you can eliminate an extra operation in the plant, it makes life easier for the assemblers, and it makes one less thing you have to double check to make sure an operation has been performed correctly."

Because this is an exterior component, the material was engineered with enhanced properties so the part wouldn't fade or change color. The composite pocket houses the fuel-filler tube, so a high-impact strength was also designed into the new material.

Avery Dennison's soft touch for interiors

Many OEMs have increased their use of thermoplastic olefin (TPO) materials for injection-molded components because of their lower cost and recyclability benefits, though good adhesion of films and coatings to TPO materials has been a limiting factor in their use. Avery Dennison's Performance Films Division has introduced a new decorative formable thermoplastic sheet called Soft-Touch for automotive and truck interior trim components. The company is applying its interior formable film technology on TPOs to produce a variety of looks, including woodgrains, high-tech metallics, geometric, and organic patterns.

The Soft-Touch film is available in thin sheets for thermoforming and injection-molding applications. It is available in rigid, thicker sheets for use in injection clad processes. The film can also be pressure formed and twin-sheeted with standard practices as well. The Soft-Touch finish is applied to the sheet during the extrusion manufacturing process, resulting in enhanced adhesion with strong resistance to chipping and flaking as well as mar and scuff resistance. It also demonstrates improved color retention even after severe UV light exposure.
