OEMs stick with SMC
Bundle up all the materials used on a passenger vehicle and less than 1% of the overall average weight tally is from thermoset composites. Although obviously not the biggest player in a vehicle's material composition makeup, sheet molding compound (SMC) and other thermoset composites' grip on various application zones remain solid. Two 2007 vehicles—the Ford Explorer Sport Trac and the Jeep Wrangler—are vivid examples of SMC's stranglehold on select applications.
