New wheel sensor

The Active Micro Sensor is particularly suitable for applications at near-zero rotational speeds.

LucasVarity Automotive Control Systems has announced a new miniaturized wheel-speed sensor. Design criteria included compact size and high reliability at competitive cost, say the makers. Mounted close to the car's wheel bearing seals, the Active Micro Sensor, uses Hall effect or magnetoresistive technology to determine wheel speed with associated conditioning electronics to generate digital signals. Lucas states that the active sensing technology used is particularly suitable for applications in which sensing at zero or near-zero speed is required, such as traction and vehicle stability control, anti-lock braking, and adaptive cruise control. The company says the sensor is also expected to be used for applications including transmission and engine rotation sensing.
