Automated heavy-truck transmission

ZF Meritor, the joint venture between Meritor Automotive and ZF Friedrichshafen, has developed the FreedomLine transmission. This fully automated heavy-truck transmission without a clutch pedal will be available as optional equipment from leading truck OEMs' production vehicles in fall 2000. The following configurations are planned: a 12-speed direct-drive model rated at 1970 N•m (1450 lb•ft) of torque and a 12-speed overdrive model rated at 2240 N•m (1650 lb•ft) of torque; a 16-speed direct drive model with 2240 N•m (1650 lb•ft) of torque and a 16-speed overdrive model rated at 2510 N•m (1850 lb•ft) of torque.
