SUV suspension changes in 2003

Full-size Ford Motor Co. SUVs go to an integrated shock-and-spring module beginning in the 2003 model year. PASA Modules LLC, a recently formed joint venture between Piston Automotive and Sachs Automotive, will assemble the shock modules.

"The shock absorber is integrated with the body spring, and on the current model it's independent," said Ronald Gesquiere, Vice President Sales and Application Engineering, Suspension for Sachs Automotive of America, based in Troy, MI. Module design/engineering work involves Sachs and Ford, while the manufacturing/engineering is by PASA.

Current model year Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators have a torsion bar front suspension on the 4x4 (coil spring front on 4x2 version), and the rear suspension is a coil spring over axle. Changing to a shock module means better tuning ability, and a lower vehicle step-in height via the altered suspension geometry, according to Brad Hamilton, Sachs Automotive Program Manager for Module Systems.

Production will encompass 2800 m2 (30,000 ft2) of space within the Piston Automotive Michigan Avenue facility, which is located in Detroit's Empowerment Zone, the site of a former GM assembly plant.

"Within the next six months alone, we expect PASA's annual OEM contracts to more than double from the current $50 million level," said Julio Caspari, President, Sachs Automotive of America.

BMW's hydrogen message

BMW will offer its new 7 Series sedan with hydrogen as an alternative fuel source. "Within the production life cycle of our new 7 Series, we will be supplying customers with hydrogen vehicles," said Burkhard Göschel, Head of Development and Purchasing, BMW. "The future will be hydrogen-related." Göschel made the announcement in Berlin at the completion of a world tour organized by BMW to promote hydrogen as a future clean energy source.

While the production hydrogen 7 Series car is likely to be at least five years away, BMW has made no secret of its caution about fuel-cell technology as a motive force for its cars, preferring to develop hydrogen-powered, internal-combustion engine technology. BMW does, however, see fuel cells as a power source for onboard electricity for its cars, especially since a compact fuel cell takes up no more room than a conventional lead accumulator, but with 5 kW of output, outclasses it in performance and endurance. BMW has a fleet of 15 dual-fuel (gasoline and hydrogen) research cars based on the previous V12 7 Series and designated 750hl. These vehicles were demonstrated on the world tour, and this AEI editor traveled in one. The cars have now covered 150,000 km (93,200 mi).

"The everyday motoring utility of this vehicle has been conclusively demonstrated," said Göschel. "We have shown, all around the world, that a hydrogen economy is viable. We have also demonstrated how industry, politicians, and research will have to pull together if we want hydrogen as the new form of energy." Commenting on the debate on the practical effectiveness of the hydrogen-powered, internal-combustion engine vs. the electric motor and fuel cell, Göschel said, "I have absolutely no problem at all here: Firstly because I know that good concepts can co-exist, and secondly because I know that if it comes to an either/or situation, the superior concept will win over in the market. What is more important is that the automobile industry is increasingly assuming hydrogen will replace gasoline and diesel in the long term." Agreement on this is essential because of the need to establish volume production. It was therefore vital that the supply industry should be part of this process.

"We must begin to industrialize hydrogen power," said Göschel. He underlined the importance of supplier support for its hydrogen program. "I am very optimistic that the supply industry will go with us down this path into an economically promising hydrogen future."

Hydrogen fueling stations are to be built in some European cities, including London and Berlin. They will not be robotized as was the station for liquefied hydrogen built at Munich airport, but will be manually operated with specific safeguards. Michael D. Jones, Hydrogen Technology Manager with BP, says the company is evaluating various technologies for the manufacture and supply of hydrogen to the transport sector. "This includes the production of hydrogen from natural gas and from the electrolysis of water linked to renewable energy sources actually at the refueling station," he said. "For a fully developed hydrogen structure, the cost of hydrogen can be competitive with that of today's conventional fuels. However, one challenge we will have to face is to make hydrogen economical for the early adopters of hydrogen-fueled vehicles, which might have to bear a disproportionate share of the initial infrastructure investment."

The BMW 7 Series gasoline-hydrogen-powered car has a 140-L cryogenic—about -250°C (-418°F)—hydrogen tank in the trunk. It provides a cruising range of about 350 km (220 mi). Using hydrogen, the 12-cylinder engine produces 150 kW (200 hp) to provide a performance similar to that of a BMW 7 Series with a 2.8-L six-cylinder engine.
