BorgWarner's heavy-duty fan clutch

BorgWarner Cooling Systems has introduced the new K26RA Fail Safe On-Off Fan Clutch for higher engine cooling needs. The fan clutch offers a 25% increase in torque over its predecessor, the K22RA. The design of the new K26RA was driven by the need to provide additional airflow for the 2002 emissions engines.

Even if the K26RA fan clutch fails completely, the vehicle can make it to a service facility without overheating the engine because the fan continues to rotate even if the clutch stops working. However, BorgWarner claims that with proper maintenance, 1.6 million km (1 million mi) of trouble-free service under normal operating conditions may be expected.

"This is basically an enhancement of a proven design that will continue to provide our customers with an advantage over competing fan drive products that are attempting to follow our spring-engaged design configuration," said Kent Damisch, Director of Commercial Sales, BorgWarner Cooling Systems.

Visteon takes NVH testing on the road

The sides of the trailer expand to provide room for engineers and technicians to set up and conduct testing.

Visteon's industry-first portable NVH dynamometer can make a day or two disappear from vehicle development. Housed in a tractor-trailer driven to a customer's site, the dynamometer allows Visteon engineers and technicians to set up a noncontact laser test according to customer specification and complete it within an hour. Results are recorded and displayed real time in a small computer analysis room adjacent to the compact test area within the trailer.

A conventional NVH test that involves "cementing accelerometers to vehicles" can be a half-day process, according to Biba Georgievski, Manager of New Products for Visteon Chassis Systems. Transporting the vehicle to a test track takes additional time. Then time must be taken to de-instrument the vehicle and analyze the results. "We do the exact same thing in an hour," she said.

Visteon's patented noncontact laser technology is used for NVH testing. Shown clealy in the above image, the red beam reflecting off a mirror is not visible in actual testing.

Visteon unveiled its portable dynamometer to the media in early April and was scheduled to follow that with demonstrations to industry. With NVH being "something that consumers are becoming more aware of" and industry already understanding the importance of fast development time, Georgievski has high hopes that the unit will help Visteon capture more business. She noted that the unit could be used on prototypes as well as production vehicles for whatever NVH-testing purposes a customer desires.

An engineer and two technicians typically will operate the portable lab, but Visteon will provide whatever level of staffing the customer requires, said Georgievski, a mechanical engineer. "And we'll put the right people on board to provide the analysis," she added. A small office area in the back of the tractor can be used for discussions between Visteon and customer representatives.

An LMS data-acquisition system provides real-time NVH test results which can be viewed from inside a separate computer analysis room.

Visteon produced the mobile lab at a relatively low cost by using a patented process for development of the innovative "diagnostic tool." A Visteon design involving several new patents, the unit uses an LMS portable data-acquisition system. It allows customers to evaluate interior sound, driveline vibration, system balance, and performance. The test chamber is isolated from the generator that is used to provide power to the dynamometers and ancillary equipment. Visteon's patented laser-balancing technology allows for testing without modification to the vehicle.

Vehicles (FWD, 2WD, 4WD, and AWD) of various wheelbase can be "fingerprinted" at speeds ranging from 32-145 km/h (20-90 mph) in as little as 20 min, with diagnostic results available a few minutes later, according to Visteon. Additional testing for such parameters as performance power measurement, two-plane system balancing, cruise speed evaluations, and subjective ratings all can be accomplished in less than an hour. Data archiving can be performed for future vehicle comparisons, and benchmarking of vehicle drivelines and powertrains is offered.
