Electronic valve timing goes beyond cam phasing
An electronic valve timing system from Siemens Automotive represents a significant step beyond cam phasing and, in fact, represents the phase-out of the camshaft. An engine equipped with the electronically actuated system, essentially the first "cam-less" engine, could appear in two years. The EVT technology, which essentially is the next generation of variable valve timing (VVT), is expected to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the emission of harmful hydrocarbons by as much as 10% over existing technologies. Improved volumetric efficiency for more torque and power is expected as a result of the complete control achieved via electronic valve actuation. This enables the valve to be opened and closed at will, allowing more airflow into the engine. The valve can also remain open for a longer time, increasing airflow at low rpm. Greater torque increase will be possible at low and middle rpm.
