Here's a preview of what some of the exhibiting companies plan to introduce or displayas of mid-December at this year's event scheduled March 5-8, 2001, Cobo Center, Detroit, MI.

Double compound fasteners

Vibration frequencies caused by motors with different speeds or wheel contact with ground irregularities generate noise and mechanical wear that can end in breakage. Double compound injection contributes to reducing these annoyances by absorbing low- and high-frequency vibrations. Fastening systems from the A Raymond Group are made of two compounds: one is rigid, ensures connection to the body, and keeps the elements attached; the other is flexible and used as an interface to help damp and filter vibrations. The double-injection technology combines two thermoplastics using duplicate molding to achieve the combined mechanical properties of the materials. This molding procedure is conducted directly in the tooling equipment using mobile mechanical elements that ensure transfer of the insert to be molded.

Air induction/fluid reservoir system

The Integrated Air Induction and Fluid Reservoir System from ABC Air Management Systems Inc. combines two independent plastic systems: a blow-molded fluid reservoir and a blow-molded air induction resonator chamber. Once assembled, the complex external feature of the reservoir and resonator form a complete filter housing and a smooth airflow path around the filter element while securing the dirty and clean air ducting. The system assembly uses all available package space functionally, eliminating volume losses for clearance, additional mounts, and installation. The product can be found on the 2002 GMT 360TrailBlazer, Bravada, and Envoy.

Blade design tool

CFX-BladeGen from AEA Technology Engineering Software is a specialized, 3-D software tool for the rapid design of rotating machinery components. The software can design axial, mixed-flow, and radial blades in applications such as pumps, compressors, fans, blowers, turbochargers, and inducers. For rapid viscous-flow screening of individual blades, the Plus module provides an embedded and fully automated computational fluid dynamics solver. The resulting turbomachinery information permits preselection of component designs and reduces the number of iterations needed to develop optimum blade profiles.

Transient generators for dual-voltage systems

Amplifier Research's transient generators meet the test requirements of today's and tomorrow's automobiles, including those that will have two batteriesa traditional 12-V battery and a 42-V battery needed to lower current and reduce weight and cost. The 200B Series transient generators offer the capability to test to the 42-V systems as well as to the other requirements of automobiles. Converging global test specifications are also anticipated by the instruments, which come preprogrammed to manufacturer-, product-, and committee-specific standards and with software for modifying parameters to meet future standards, product-development sequences, and user-specific requirements.

Fault insertion system

The effects of electrical-wiring and equipment failures on embedded controllers may cause unpredictable vehicle behavior or system operation. Applied Dynamics International's Fault Insertion System is an automated tool that allows controls engineers to investigate the combinations of potential faults that may occur in the real world by using a hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Faults are inserted into the electrical interface from the configurable Windows NT application. Optionally, scheduled or triggered faults can be programmed to occur during a simulation.
