SAE Publishes Report on 42-Volt Systems Warrendale, PA, October 16, 2000 -
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) has published
42-Volt Systems: Technology Implications for the Automotive Industry
by Daniel J. Holt. The report examines the technological revolution that
will occur in automobiles as a result of the adoption of 42 volt systems.
Increasing the electrical system voltage from 12 to 42 volts will provide
engineers with options in engine development that have not been available
before. This report looks at a wide-ranging array of benefits which will
result, including improvements in passenger comfort, interior electronics,
fuel economy, and emissions. As an example, 42 Volt Systems notes that
fuel savings of up to 10% may be possible with full implementation of
the 42 volt electrical system and the "beltless" engine.
Compiled and written by Dan Holt, former Editor-in-Chief of Automotive Engineering
International magazine, this report also addresses the technical challenges
engineers must face, including the issues of storage devices, generation
of the 42 volts, and distribution of power.
Predicting that 42-volt systems will first be implemented on higher-end
luxury cars, and that full implementation across all car lines may take
two decades, 42 Volt Systems: Technology Implications for the Automotive
Industry contains the most current information on all of the critical
aspects related to the adoption of this new technology. It concludes that
"the car twenty years from now may be totally different than the one available
today."
42 Volt Systems: Technology Implications for the Automotive Industry
(Order number RR-008) is available for US$875 from SAE International,
400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA 15096-0001. This book can also
be ordered by calling toll-free (800) 877-606-7323, or by using the SAE
