Aftermarket Update
Tuesday, September 20 Jack Cameron, Vice President of AASA and Staff Executive for the Brake Manufacturers Council will provide a brief overview of AASA, it's Know Your Parts campaign, and current activities of the Brake Manufacturers Council. This presentation is for anyone interested in the automotive aftermarket. It will provide insights to the only North American supplier-only trade association, efforts to promote quality products to combat low-cost, short line suppliers and activities of the Brake Manufacturers Council since becoming a part of the MEMA / AASA organization. Pat Healey has been the President of Friction Material Standards Institute (FMSI) for the past nine years. He will provide an overview of FMSI's history and current activities. FMSI's function is to provide the automotive aftermarket with a standardized part numbering system for friction and related products. Healey will show examples of the typical information available to FMSI members. A major benefit of this standardized system and the information available is to assist members in dealing with two major issues facing the automotive aftermarket: 1. increasing part complexity and 2. part proliferation. Ken Hamann is the Executive Director of the Brake Standards Association. As vehicles continue to implement more sophisticated & integrated chassis control systems the need for developing and implementing minimum performance standards for aftermarket brake friction material becomes more important to the industry. He will provide the background behind this evolution and the need to address this issue. This will lead to an in depth overview of the Brake Effectiveness Evaluation Procedure (BEEPĀ®) protocol and how it can be used by the aftermarket to provide added confidence and documentation relative to their products performance to current and future vehicle requirements. Details on the testing required, the assumptions used, to provide vehicle level performance estimates, and how the process can be utilized by individual aftermarket suppliers will be discussed. A major benefit in the use of BEEPĀ® is that it uses laboratory dynamometers to evaluate aftermarket friction material avoiding the need to run full vehicle tests which is difficult and expensive for the aftermarket to consider. |
