New players are emerging to influence the future of vehicle designs as global energy and information corporations see new opportunities, as government agencies hand out billions of dollars to jump-start new technologies, as entrepreneurs think of new business models and as the pressure to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions from passenger cars increases.
A new transportation system for a digital age is emerging with vehicles linking to a smart power grid as well as communication networks. It all adds up to a sizable market opportunity - smart grid infrastructure, energy storage technology, infotainment and communication devices - how much of a role will these new players have in influencing the design of future vehicles.

Vice President GME Powertrain Engineering General Motors Company
Kent Helfrich is Executive Director of Electrical Systems at General Motors where he is responsible for GM's global electrical system strategy and execution.
Prior to this position, Helfrich held several technical and leadership positions with responsibility for software engineering strategy and execution, advanced propulsion controls, engine calibration and automatic transmission controls development.
Mr. Helfrich is a member of SAE and IEEE and is a registered professional engineer. He holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the Ohio State University and an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
CTO, Vice President, Global Research & Development and President, GM Ventures
Jon Lauckner was named GM Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), effective April 1, 2012. In addition to his role as CTO, Jon remains President, GM Ventures and also responsible for leading GM's Global Research and Development organization.
Prior to becoming CTO, Lauckner was responsible for forming General Motors Ventures, LLC, a separate subsidiary started July 1, 2010. As president, Jon leads a team that makes equity investments in startup companies that are developing next-generation automotive technology.
Lauckner has also previously held the positions of Vice President of General Motors Global Product Planning and Vice President of Global Program Management
Jon joined General Motors in 1979 and held a number of positions in product engineering, powertrain engineering and product development, including international assignments in South America and Europe from 1992-2005.
Lauckner received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1979. He earned a Master of Science degree in management from Stanford Business School in 1990 through the Sloan Fellowship program and attended the GM-Harvard Senior Executive Program in 2001.
Chief Technical Officer and Vice President Ford Research and Innovation
Paul Mascarenas is chief technical officer and vice president, Ford Research and Innovation. He leads Ford's worldwide research organization, overseeing the development and implementation of the company's technology strategy and plans.
Prior to his current role, Mascarenas served as vice president of Engineering for Global Product Development, with responsibility for engineering the car, truck, SUV and crossover vehicles for Ford Motor Company brands. He also was instrumental in the development and implementation of the global Ford brand 'DNA'.
Since joining Ford in 1982, Mascarenas has amassed extensive experience in product development, having held various positions in product planning, program management, body engineering and powertrain while on assignments in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. He was appointed a company vice president in January 2005 and has held his current position since January 2011.
Mascarenas holds a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of London, King's College in England. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, an SAE International Fellow and serves as a member of the FISITA Honorary Committee.

Mr. Yamanoi has more than 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, with Vehicle Safety being his area of expertise. He is well known in the industry for making valuable contribution in developing projects such as occupant protection systems, pedestrian protection test methods, & frontal/side crash test methods.
His career stints include being the chairman of vehicle safety committee in JAMA and member of several Global Safety forums. He was awarded with Special Safety Award by NHTSA at Enhanced Safety Vehicle Conference held in Japan.
Prior to being appointed as VP-Technology at KPIT Cummins, Mr. Yamanoi has worked with Nissan Motors Limited in various capacities, the most recent being as General Manager of Technical Planning Department at the Nissan Technology Development Division.
Justin R. Rattner
Chief Technology Officer
Justin Rattner is a corporate vice president and the chief technology officer (CTO) of Intel Corporation. He is also an Intel Senior Fellow and head of Intel Labs where he directs Intel's global research efforts in processors, programming, systems, security, communications and, most recently, user experience and interaction. As part of Intel Labs, Rattner is also responsible for funding academic research worldwide through its Science and Technology Centers, international research institutes, and individual faculty awards.
In 1989, Rattner was named Scientist of the Year by R&D Magazine for his leadership in parallel and distributed computer architecture. In December 1996, Rattner was featured as Person of the Week by ABC World News for his visionary work on the Department of Energy ASCI Red System, the first computer to sustain one trillion operations per second (one teraFLOPS) and the fastest computer in the world between 1996 and 2000. In 1997, Rattner was honored as one of the Computing 200, the 200 individuals having the greatest impact on the U.S. computer industry today, and subsequently profiled in the book Wizards and Their Wonders from ACM Press. Rattner is a member of the Department of Defense/Department of Homeland Security Enduring Security Framework and serves as a member of its Operations Group. He is a trustee of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and serves as Intel's executive sponsor for Cornell University where he is a member of the External Advisory Board for the School of Engineering.
Rattner joined Intel in 1973. He was named its first Principal Engineer in 1979 and its fourth Intel Fellow in 1988. Prior to joining Intel, Rattner held positions with Hewlett-Packard Company and Xerox Corporation. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Cornell University in electrical engineering and computer science.
Joseph S. Carra
Acting Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety Research US Department of Transportation
Joe Carra has held several senior executive positions at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), heading up the national data center, rulemaking, and strategic planning. His current position is acting Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety Research. He is both an engineer and statistician by training and has over 30 years' experience in the public health and safety field. Prior to coming to NHTSA in 2000, Joe worked for EPA and the private sector. Appointed as a senior executive in 1987, he has extensive experience leading large multidisciplinary organizations. He has led the design and implementation of numerous national data collection and analysis efforts of all kinds. He also has many years' experience leading the development and implementation of significant government standards, regulations and voluntary programs at the national and international levels. His responsibilities have required skill and expertise in dealing with the media, testifying before congress, and developing and negotiating new federal legislation. In addition to receiving a meritorious executive award from the president of the united states, he is the recipient of two awards from the secretary of transportation, two gold, one silver and four bronze medals from EPA, a Centers For Disease Control (CDC) honor award, a management excellence award, an EEO award for managers, a vice presidential hammer award, and a special recognition award from the secretary of health and human services.
