Personal Mobility - Creating a Smart and Autonomous Journey

The future of transportation is here, and SAE 2016 Convergence is leading the journey to explore the technology space that enables smart mobility. Join the conversation surrounding Personal Mobility - Creating a Smart and Autonomous Journey at 2016 Convergence, to be held September 19-21 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan, USA.

"Convergence stands apart in its consistent ability to expose participants to leading-edge technology and software ideas that influence our business," explains Convergence General Chair James Buczkowski, Henry Ford Technical Fellow and Director, Electrical and Electronics Systems, Ford Motor Company. "Through supplier participation and a direct interface with industry leaders and decision-makers of the technologies that now or soon will be integrated into our vehicles, Convergence encourages attendees to extend their professional network, learn from others and consider new innovations."

In his role at Ford, Buczkowski is responsible for the research and design of telematics, driver information and active systems. An expert in connected vehicles and smart mobility, he and the other members of the 2016 Convergence Executive Leadership Team are guiding program content focusing on the key elements that work in tandem to provide a complete mobility solution:
  • User experience
  • Data and analytics
  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Mobility services
  • Connectivity

Convergence will also explore electronics, embedded and off-board software, systems engineering and modes of transport in the technology space that serve as the foundation for personal mobility.

"Convergence merges the aspects of traditional mechanical engineering with our rapidly evolving technology culture to view the automotive industry in new ways," Buczkowski explains. "We are migrating from a focus on building reliable cars and trucks to creating comprehensive mobility experiences enabled by technology."

"This evolution in mobility engineering requires input and ideas from a much wider community of partners," he continues. " Convergence promotes collaboration and the exchange of innovations oriented toward great mobility encounters for users."

SAE 2016 Convergence, led by Ford Motor Company and organized by a cross section of the top automotive decision-makers in the industry, is expected to draw more than 2,000 attendees worldwide. This year's program will introduce a new format that's designed to best address the future of automotive technology by highlighting a specific subject each day:
  • Leadership Day: Features three executive keynote speakers and panel discussions highlighting: Automotive Innovators; State of Supply Chain - an Analyst's View; and State of the Business - OEM EE Leaders.
  • Engineers Day: Includes in-depth technical presentations from industry experts in six tracks: Architecting to Enable and Scale; Open Source as an Enabler; People/Technical Workforce Transformation; Designing for an Experience; Technology Disruptors; and Leveraging Consumer Electronics.
  • Partner Day: Consists of technical programs, seminars and training sessions offered by partner associations and organizations with a stake in the automotive electronics industry.

"Success in the automotive industry today is based on the experiences we create for users," Buczkowski concludes. "Convergence provides the right forum for us to identify what's of high value for drivers to improve their personal journey."

For more than 40 years, SAE Convergence has brought together automotive insiders, technology experts and thought leaders from across the globe to address the impact of technology insertion and the issues critical to mobility electronics implementation. Each element of this conference focuses on the open exchange of ideas about current and future technologies in automotive electronics, personal mobility and electronics integration.
