Rooms 44/46/48 Honoring the memory, character, and work of L. Ray Buckendale, 1946 SAE President whose greatest desire was to develop potential abilities in young people, the Annual L. Ray Buckendale Lecture promotes automotive ground vehicles for either on- or off-road operation in commercial or military service. The objective is to provide procedures and data useful in formulating solutions pertaining to commercial vehicle design, manufacture, operations, and maintenance. The Buckendale Lecture is directed primarily to the needs of young engineers and students with emphasis on practical aspects of the topic. This year's honoree is Dr. Mehdi Ahmadian, Dan Pletta Professor and Director, Center for Vehicle Systems & Safety, at Virginia Tech. His lecture is titled "Integrating Electromechanical Systems in Commercial Vehicles for Improved Handling, Safety, and Comfort." Mehdi Ahmadian is Dan Pletta Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he also holds the position of Director of Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety (CVeSS), and the Railway Technologies Laboratory (RTL). He is the founding director of CVeSS, RTL, Virginia Institute for Performance Engineering and Research (VIPER), and the Advanced Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory (AVDL). Dr. Ahmadian has authored more than 120 archival journal publications and more than 250 conference publications, including a number of keynote lectures. He has edited 6 technical proceedings and has made more than 300 technical presentations in topics related to advanced technologies for ground vehicles. He holds eight U.S. and international patents, and has edited four technical volumes. He currently serves as Editor for the International Journal of Vehicle System Dynamics, Editor-in-Chief of Shock and Vibration journal, Editor-in-Chief for Advances in Automobile Engineering, and Senior Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the journal of Smart Materials Research and Advances in Mechanical Engineering. In the past, he has served as Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics (1989 - 1996), the AIAA Journal (2000 - 2008), and journal of Shock and Vibration (2003 - 2011). Dr. Ahmadian is Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), and Associate Fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He is the recipient of the 2008 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) Forest R. McFarland Award, in addition to 2014 SAE International L. Ray Buckendale Award, which includes a plenary lecture on "Integrating Electromechanical Systems in Commercial Vehicles for Improved Handling, Safety, and Comfort." Dr. Ahmadian is an active member of SAE International. His activities include: Member-at-Large of the SAE Membership Board, member of Executive Council, SAE International Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress (ComVEC), and past Chair of the SAE Chassis and Suspension Committee. Dr. Ahmadian's research interests include: vehicle system dynamics and control, advanced automotive systems, Smart Materials and Systems, Advanced materials for improving ground vehicle dynamic performance and control, energy harvesting systems, intelligent suspensions, magneto-rheological fluids, and biodynamics.
