Technical Program

Technical Sessions

The solutions-oriented Technical Program at the SAE 2017 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress will provide the perfect opportunity for engineering professionals to discover, collaborate, and engage with peers from around the globe. The symposia and interactive panel discussions, developed by industry professionals to maximize industry relevance, are designed to allow industry members of all levels to gather relevant and stimulating information to enhance skills and creativity today.

Technical Expert Panels

As an extension of the Technical Program at COMVEC, these panel discussions bring industry experts together to discuss critical issues regarding the integration and application of technologies relevant to solving emerging issues in the engineering and mobility communities. The goal of Technical Expert Panels is to enhance the technical understanding of items critical to those participating in the audience via problem-solving discussions and exchange of ideas. Each attendee is encouraged to pose questions, share experiences, and explore practical solutions.

Data Driven Decisions in Industry

Successful businesses make the best decisions using the available information. But the information available is expanding at an exponential rate. How should commercial vehicle businesses adapt to stay competitive? This symposium starts with an exploration of data driven decision making in industry, how the data landscape is changing and posits on the future of business with ever increasing data and connectivity.

The symposium continues with 3 areas that are currently influencing the industry:
  1. "ADAS and autonomous vehicles" will explore real time machine made decisions
  2. "Vehicle Architectures for Connectivity and Processing will focus on necessary hardware
  3. "Machine learning and the use of Big Data" will discuss methods of dealing with the data
  4. "CAE Meets Real World" will show how data is changing the development cycle
The symposium will conclude with observations from the sub-topic discussions by identifying unifying themes and the potential implications to the commercial vehicle industry.

Efficiency Improvements for Commercial Vehicles

Continuous improvement of the efficiency is critical to creating value for customers in the commercial vehicle segment, for both on-highway and off-highway markets. Technology advancements continue to provide opportunities to reduce emissions and improve the efficiency of the internal combustion engine and powertrain systems. Advancements in electronics and predictive controls provide the opportunity to drive improvements in the overall energy management of the system. Advancements in hybrid and full-electric powertrains are providing alternatives producing little/no emissions at competitive costs. Finally, the availability of data along advancement of telecommunications and automation provide opportunities to improve the overall operating efficiency of the application.

This symposium track will provide insights from key OEM’s/suppliers on the impact of efficiency improvements of future technologies as they relate to the on-highway and off-highway markets for:
  • Emission regulations
  • Powertrain
  • Vehicle

The recognition and acceptance of aerodynamics as a major player in trucking efficiency has increased significantly over the past decade. The effective integration of aerodynamic concepts and technologies into future vehicles will require a multidisciplinary/multi-design point approach. The symposium will address the current status and future role of aerodynamic design methods, tools and processes
