The Peterbilt 579 exhibited by the Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck team is powered by the recently unveiled Cummins X15 Performance Series and incorporates many of the key engine and vehicle technologies that were developed and demonstrated in its successful U.S. DOE-partnered SuperTruck program completed in 2014. The integrated powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic technologies have successfully completed rigorous validation with many of these technologies and features available today in the Peterbilt 579 EPIQ. The Cummins-Peterbilt team is now embarking on DOE’s SuperTruck 2 program with increased focus on cost effectiveness of advanced high efficiency features, all aimed at potential future customer and regulatory requirements, and ultimately a sustainable freight transportation system. Daimler Trucks North America’s (DTNA) SuperTruck program achieved 115% efficiency improvement, surpassing the DOE program’s goal of 50% improvement. During the development of the SuperTruck, DTNA engineers investigated how high-risk, high-reward technologies used in other industries could be applied to Class 8 vehicles. In the end, DTNA’s final SuperTruck demonstrator ran a five-day, 312-mi (502-km) round-trip route on Texas interstates, at a weight of 65,000 lb (29,500 kg) GVWR at a speed of 65 mph (105 km/h), where it achieved an average result of 12.2 mpg.
