Theme: Safer & Cleaner Transportation in a Digital AgeIntelligent vehicles and infrastructure are generating a great deal of buzz. But what makes a vehicle or road network "intelligent", and how will this technology benefit the average consumer and society? How feasible are these technologies, and what might we actually see deployed? At this year's plenary session, government and industry experts will explore these questions along with the challenges and opportunities of intelligent vehicles. They will also examine the potential safety, infrastructure and environmental impacts of this exciting new technology.

She was a finalist for a 2012 Gerald Loeb Award for business journalism. Angela is president-elect of the National Press Club and serves on the National Press Club Journalism Institute board. She is a member of Journalism and Women Symposium and earned a bachelor of journalism from the University of Missouri. Before joining Bloomberg in 2007, Angela reported for a trade magazine covering freight transportation and as a Washington correspondent for a chain of Midwestern newspapers. Greg Cohen, President, American Highway Users Alliance Greg Cohen is President of the American Highway Users Alliance. Mr. Cohen serves motorists and highway supporters as their advocate in Washington- pursuing policies that improve highway safety, reduce congestion and increase mobility. Members of The Highway Users include 300 diverse businesses and non profit organizations that rely on safe and efficient roads to transport their families, employees, customers, and products. Prior to joining The Highway Users in July 2002, Greg served as a professional staff member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee where he was responsible for oversight of the Federal Highway Administration's implementation of the 1998 highway bill, TEA 21. As a licensed Professional Engineer, Greg's primary role on the Committee was to provide policy assistance and technical expertise in areas of highway planning, design, operations, and construction. Chuck Gulash, Senior Executive Engineer, Toyota Technical Center, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing, North America, Inc. E. Charles (Chuck) Gulash is a Senior Executive Engineer at Toyota Technical Center (TTC), the North American R&D division of Toyota Motor Corporation. He is currently Director of Toyota's Collaborative Safety Research Center and is also involved in advanced research as part of the Toyota Research Institute of North America. Gulash joined TTC in 1996 as General Manager of Vehicle Evaluation at the Arizona Proving Ground and has held a series of leadership roles in vehicle evaluation, performance development, materials development and advanced research. He became Vice President of Vehicle Evaluation in 1999, Vice President of Vehicle Evaluation & Engineering in 2002 and Vice President of Research & Materials Engineering in 2006, before assuming his current position in 2011. Prior to joining TTC, Gulash held various engineering and management positions at General Motors Corporation, where he was involved with vehicle safety, design engineering and total vehicle development. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and is a recipient of the SAE Arch T. Colwell Merit Award. He serves on the External Advisory Boards of the University of Michigan Mechanical Engineering Department and Transportation Research Institute, as well as the Visiting Committee at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Michigan - Dearborn. Gulash also serves as a Board Member of SPARK, a public-private partnership to advance innovation-based economic development in the Ann Arbor region. Robert P. Hartwig, President, Insurance Information Institute Robert P. Hartwig is president of the Insurance Information Institute. Since joining the I.I.I. in 1998 as an economist and becoming chief economist in 1999, Dr. Hartwig has focused his work on improving understanding of key insurance issues across all industry stakeholders including media, consumers, insurers, producers, regulators, legislators and investors. Follow him on Twitter. Presently, the I.I.I. provides assistance on thousands of stories annually and covers all aspects of print, television, radio and new media while also responding to thousands of requests from I.I.I. member companies and other constituencies. The institute is generally recognized to be the most credible and frequently used single source of information and referral for the widely diverse insurance industry. Its Board represents companies from all areas of the industry, including life insurers. In addition, some 20 other insurance organizations contract with I.I.I. for media services. The I.I.I. is involved in products and services as varied as original research and publications with the National Bureau of Economic Research and The Wharton School, through widely used consumer publications and Fact Books, to maintaining the National Insurance Consumer Helpline on behalf of the entire U.S. property/casualty industry. Each year the institute's staff makes more than 100 presentations worldwide on behalf of member organizations. The Institute also develops software and apps designed to improve policyholder preparedness in the event of a routine claim or major natural catastrophe. Dr. Hartwig previously served as director of economic research and senior economist with the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) in Boca Raton, Florida, where he performed rate of return and cost of capital modeling and testified at workers' compensation rate hearings in many states. He has also worked as senior economist for the Swiss Reinsurance Group in New York and as senior statistician for the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Economic Association, the American Risk and Insurance Association, the National Association of Business Economics and the CPCU Society. In 2005 and 2006 Dr. Hartwig served on the state of Florida's Task Force for Long-Term Homeowners Insurance Solutions. From May 2005 to May 2008 he served on the board of directors of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Association of New York. Currently, Dr. Hartwig serves on the board of directors of the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education. Dr. Hartwig received his Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has served as an instructor at the University of Illinois and at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Hartwig also holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) credential. Anthony Levandowski, Google's Self-Driving Car Project Anthony Levandowski is the product manager for Google's self-driving car technology. Anthony joined Google to launch Streetview in 2007. Prior to that he founded 510 Systems, a developer of mobile mapping and surveying technology. Notable robots include ghostrider, an unmanned motorcycle now in the smithsonian and pribot, an unmanned prius used to deliver pizza in San Francisco. He has an MS and BS from UC Berkeley in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. Gummada Murthy, Associate Program Director, Operations, AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) Mr. Gummada Murthy, Associate Program Director, Operations, AASHTO, since June 2012, is responsible for several operations programs. Those programs include AASHTO liaison for the Highways Subcommittee on Maintenance, Subcommittee on Traffic Engineering, Subcommittee on Systems Operation and Management, and the Special Committee on Transportation Security and Emergency Management. Previously to joining AASHTO, Mr. Murthy served as Senior Program Officer, TRB, National Academy of Sciences, responsible for implementation of Reliability research focus Area outcomes from the Academy's ongoing Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2). Prior to joining NAS, Gummada served as Director of the Operations Division at The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and responsible for developing and issuing statewide policy and procedures for all operations related to technology and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) programs that support incident management, roadway weather information system to support snow and ice removal programs, and VDOT's High Occupancy Tolling and pricing programs. He also has a responsible role in research and implementation of innovative technology in the VDOT operations programs such as GPS based roadway information mining programs, Active Traffic Management and Commercial Vehicle Operations. Prior to joining VDOT, Gummada served as Director of Operations for Washington State and as Asst. Turnpike Operations Engineer for Florida Turnpike Enterprise at FDOT, Florida. Collectively, Gummada has more than 25 years of experience in all phases of transportation planning and engineering with a focus in roadway operations and roadside infrastructure maintenance, including ITS, signal systems, ITS deployment and operations, and roadway maintenance programs. He is a graduate of the University of South of Florida, Tampa, Florida and holds a Masters of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from USF. He is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia and served as Chair and lead member on several tasks forces for AASHTO Subcommittees on Systems Operations and Management (SSOM) and Special Committee on Transportation Security and Emergency Management (SCOTSEM). Daniel C. Smith, Senior Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Daniel Smith is the Senior Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a position he has held since October 2010. His office is responsible for rulemaking, research, and enforcement in the areas of vehicle safety and fuel economy and the collection, analysis and dissemination of all highway safety data. Dan received a Presidential Rank Award as a Meritorious Executive in 2010. Dan served as the Associate Administrator for Enforcement at NHTSA for the preceding five years. In that job he provided executive leadership to offices responsible for assuring compliance with the federal motor vehicle safety standards through crash tests and other methods; investigating possible defects in motor vehicles and equipment; ensuring that safety recalls occur; collecting penalties for violations of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards; conducting criminal investigations of odometer fraud violations; and implementing the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). He has managed hundreds of successful investigations involving noncompliant or defective vehicles and equipment (including tires and child seats) that resulted in recalls. In 2009, Dan led a NHTSA-wide team that developed and implemented the CARS program (known popularly as "Cash for Clunkers") within 30 days of enactment of the authorizing statute; processed nearly 700,000 transactions worth nearly $3 billion in 30 days; and paid over 99% of valid claims in the next 30 days. The program provided a significant boost to the nation's economy at a critical time and ensured the replacement of nearly 700,000 gas guzzling vehicles by more fuel-efficient models. Just before joining NHTSA, Dan was the Associate Administrator for Safety at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). He provided leadership for the entire railroad safety program, including regulatory development, safety inspection, accident investigation, and enforcement actions. He led the development of the Rail Safety Action Plan, a comprehensive response to critical safety issues that reduced train accidents when implemented. Dan spent most of his 27 years at FRA as an attorney, first as a trial attorney and, for 13 years, as the Assistant Chief Counsel for Safety. In that role he managed a large division of lawyers that handled enforcement, rulemaking, litigation, and legislation for the safety program. Dan attended law school at the University of San Diego and has a master's degree (from the University of Wisconsin) and bachelor's degree (University of Detroit) in political science. He is a member of the California and District of Columbia bar associations.
