FAA 14 CFR Part 33 Rulemaking for Turbine Engine Icing

John B. Fisher John B. Fisher
Aerospace Engineer
Engine & Propeller Directorate
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

The Federal Aviation Administration published a final rule to expand the environmental icing conditions used for certification of new turbine engines for flight in icing. The expanded icing environment includes supercooled large drops, or SLD; as well as glaciated and mixed phase icing conditions commonly referred to as ice crystals. This presentation provides an overview of the engine icing rulemaking package, the new and revised airworthiness standards, and the associated guidance materials that may be used to show compliance.
