International Truck & Bus Meeting & Exhibition

Micro-Truck Baja Student Competition

The 2001 International Truck and Bus Event will host the 15th annual Micro-Truck Baja Student Design Competition. The General Committee and the SAE Chicago Section extend their invitation to all SAE student chapters and to any interested Micro-Truck Baja enthusiast to participate.

The competition consists of either modifying a stock model truck or building a completely custom vehicle to traverse an all-terrain course. Two competitive classes are available to students - Modified Stock and Unlimited. A third "Open" class is available to any person who would like to design and build a vehicle, but is unable to compete on a collegiate team. The open class is meant as for-fun-only event with no prizes awarded and no presentations required. Click here for official rules, track layout and entry forms.

The modified truck must excel in two areas of competition: performance and design. The performance aspect is put to the test by a race against the clock on a tortuous all-terrain course. The track, which will be located at Navy Pier, will have obstacles including steep inclines, water trenches, sandpits and rock fields. The second and equally weighted aspect is the design and presentation competition. Each entry will be judged by a panel to note excellence in planning and execution of its design.

Awards
The awards are based on two separate classes, with the award being equal in each. Cash awards and a plaque/trophy will be given to the top three finishers in each class as follows.

1st $700
2nd $500
3rd $300

In addition, 4th through 10th place finishers will receive $50. Trophies or plaques will also be given in each class (except open) for the best performance and best design/presentation.
