Current Industry Activities: Responsible for OBD planning and generating OBD system technical information, as a Technical Leader in the Global Powertrain Controls System Engineering Department, Powertrain Engineering, Ford Motor Company.

Involved in many of the SAE Electrical/Electronics Diagnostic committees developing OBD diagnostic protocols (J1979, J2190, J2012, J1962, J1930, J1699-3) as well as other industry groups concerned with OBD-II implementation (USCAR Low Emission Partnership, OBD Workgroup), field service (iATN) and I/M testing.

Field of Specialization and Years of Experience: Hired into Ford Motor Company in 1979. Worked in the Powertrain Strategy and Self Test Section designing engine and transmission control strategies for production passenger car and truck applications from 1984 to 1988. Promoted to OBD-I Development Section Supervisor in 1988. Responsible for development and production release of all of Ford's OBD-I diagnostic calibrations. Assumed responsibilities of OBD-II Feature Development Section Supervisor in 1991. Responsible for design, development and testing of OBD-II diagnostic algorithms for production applications. Currently responsible for OBD implementation and compliance planning, and regulatory/service documentation.

Special Awards or Recognition: Received 7 patents and the Henry Ford Technological Award for various transmission control algorithms.

Education: Graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass in 1979 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1988 with an MBA in Business Administration

Bernard is an Engineering Consultant, working with clients around the world, operating mainly in the automotive industry sector. He works in a range of technology areas including internal combustion engine design, development and application; automotive electronics and technical considerations in the detailed areas of noise and vibration, both powertrain and complete vehicle, instrumentation, measurement and control and CAE technical development and implementation policy. He is an advocate of modern systems engineering and mathematical modelling.

He is professionally active with various technical societies, including the IMechE and SAE. A Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and was elected a Fellow of SAE in 1997 and he currently serves as an SAE Director. He is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in the Principles of Engineering Design at the University of Sussex. He has written numerous papers on noise and vibration, engine control and related matters.

Bob Gruszczynski Bob Gruszczynski

Bob has a BSEE from Lawrence Technological University. For over 20 years, Bob has been involved in the design and implementation of embedded electronic powertrain control systems. Bob has a United States Patent for his work in misfire detection systems and has been involved in numerous "first in the world starts" of new vehicle powertrain applications. Bob has also been involved in the development and testing of On Board Diagnostics Systems and publications in the area of OBD Communications techniques.

Bob is currently the OBD Communication Expert for Volkswagen Group of America. His duties include investigation and analysis of OBD issues in the field for Volkswagen group vehicles. His activities also include technical representation for the Volkswagen Group in North America in OBD related matters. He is Vice-Chairman of the SAE E/E Diagnostics Committee and is a constant contributor to its attendant OBD-related Task Forces. He is Vice-Chairman of both the J1962 Vehicle Diagnostic Connector Task Force and J1978 OBDII Scan Tool Task Forces. He is also co-author of the J1699-2 Test Cases for OBD-II Scan Tools and I/M Test Equipment Task Force.

Jeff Potts Jeff Potts
Cummins, Inc.

Jeff Potts is Chief Engineer of diagnostics and OBD development at Cummins Inc. His current responsibilities include oversight of the diagnostics development effort for diesel and natural gas engine projects requiring OBD II, EMD, HDOBD and Euro OBD certification. Jeff has been with Cummins for 18 years and prior to Cummins worked for AlliedSignal Bendix in the areas of ABS and Traction Control for 9 years. Jeff has spent the majority of his career working on controls algorithm development, system level testing, and calibration tuning but also has spent time in the manufacturing and marketing areas. Jeff received his BSME from Purdue University and an MBA from Indiana University South Bend.

Mike Regenfuss
CARB

Mike Regenfuss has been involved in the development and support of OBD regulations for over 16 years. Previously as a manager in the OBD program, Mike oversaw enforcement testing and certification work. As a branch chief, Mike now oversees all aspects of the OBD II program for light-duty vehicles and the HD OBD program for heavy-duty vehicles including revisions to the regulations.

Mr. Regenfuss holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona.

Employment History:
1980-1985: Commissioned Officer, United States Navy working in materials research and development for application in the Naval nuclear propulsion of ships. The work was focused on developing corrosion and fracture mechanics models for use in applying nuclear fuel materials, high strength nickel based super alloys, and heavy section steel in nuclear propulsion systems.

1985-1991 Product Assurance Engineer at Delphi (formerly AC Spark Plug) in Flint working primarily on spark plugs and exhaust oxygen sensors. This work was focused on improving design and manufacturing process reliability, including implementation of quality tools such as design of experiments, quality function deployment, statistical process control, etc.

1991 - Present: Onboard Diagnostic II (OBD II) diagnostic development at the GM Powertrain Group. This work includes implementing statistical techniques in OBD design, model based on-board diagnostic design, development of OBD requirements for new powertrain systems, and in use assessment of OBD systems. Organized and presented at numerous SAE OBD and Powertrain Controls technical meetings.

Hal Zatorski Hal Zatorski
Chrysler Group LLC

As Manager of Powertrain Engineering On-Board Diagnostics Programs for all Chrysler Group LLC product, Mr. Zatorski is responsible for OBD compliance and requirements definition and associated coordination for all OBD Engineering development and implementation activities, including advance development, production development, calibration methodologies, manufacturing and quality and warranty; he is also the Engineering OBD regulatory agency liaison and the Chrysler lead in the USCAR Low Emissions Partnership OBD Committee.

Mr. Zatorski's career with Chrysler has been focused primarily in Powertrain Engineering with assignments in Advanced Fuel Metering Systems, Advanced Emissions Systems, Emissions Component Development, Emission Systems Development, Powertrain Business Group, Powertrain Planning and Powertrain OBD Programs. He is one of Chrysler's pioneers in the development of feedback emissions control systems and on-board diagnostics. Mr. Zatorski has been involved in OBD for nineteen years and has held the position of Manager, OBD Programs for fourteen years. His education includes a B.S. and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.B.A. degree.

Andrew Zettel Andrew Zettel
General Motors LLC

Andrew Zettel is the Technical Lead for OBD in the Hybrid Powertrain Engineering Team at General Motors in Milford Michigan. His responsibilities have included the OBD systems integration for BAS (Belt Alternator Starter), 2 Mode, and Volt system architectures. Mr. Zettel started his career in the vehicle emissions testing area of Environment Canada and later moved on to the Hybrid Controls Team at Azure Dynamics Corporation from 1999 to 2003.
