Hugh Blaxill Hugh Blaxill
Managing Director
MAHLE Powertrain LLC

Blaxill has been Managing Director at MAHLE Powertrain LLC for over six years. He is responsible for both the Engineering Services and Test Systems groups. Prior to that, he was responsible for MAHLE Powertrain’s research-and-development team in the U.K. In that role, significant integration activities were undertaken with MAHLE's internal advanced engineering groups enabling increases in R&D investment and more diverse product-development activities. Blaxill has authored numerous technical papers and has a number of patents, the majority in the area of combustion development. Blaxill joined MAHLE Powertrain (at that time Cosworth) from Ricardo, where he spent four years doing light-duty diesel engine combustion and mechanical development projects. He studied at the University of Bath in the U.K. achieving both a bachelor’s and master’s in engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in the U.K.

Scott Curran Scott Curran
Research and Development, Fuels Engines and Emissions Research Center
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Scott Curran, Ph.D., is a research-and-development staff member in the Fuels Engines and Emissions Research Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Curran is a principal investigator for light-duty advanced combustion research projects. He is also involved in vehicle systems research projects, well-to-wheels analysis for mobile and stationary power sources, and is an active collaborator with DOE Clean Cities for alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technology outreach and education and serves on the board of directors for the East Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalition. He served as the vehicle lead for the ORNL Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy project where ORNL 3D-printed a working range extended vehicle and a small house that share energy. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. in energy science and engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Kenneth C. Howden Kenneth C. Howden
Director, 21st Century Truck Partnership
U.S. Department of Energy

In the Vehicle Technologies Program under the DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office, Howden is Director for the 21st Century Truck Partnership with four federal agencies and 15 heavy-duty truck OEMS and major suppliers. He also manages several cooperative R&D agreements with USCAR OEM partners and the national laboratories and is the government chair of the USDRIVE Advanced Combustion and Emission Control Tech Team. Howden has worked as a mechanical engineer in vehicle technology R&D for 29 years with DOE and the U.S. Army. He holds a BSME from Virginia Tech and an MEA from George Washington University.

Robert Wagner Robert Wagner
Director of the Fuels Engines and Emissions Research Center
Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Robert Wagner, Ph.D., is Director of the Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; a Professor with the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and a Fellow of SAE International and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. His responsibilities include the coordination and development of strategic internal and external collaborations at ORNL to better support the mission of the U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Technologies Office. Wagner has been principal investigator on many research activities spanning low-temperature combustion, unstable combustion fundamentals, nonlinear controls, thermodynamics, renewable fuels, and emissions characterization. This includes the integration of ORNL expertise in high-performance computing, neutron sciences, material sciences, and advanced manufacturing to accelerate the development of advanced transportation technologies. Wagner is on the editorial board of four international journals and has authored more than 100 technical publications.
