Schengen Visa & Residence Permits
These pages contain guidelines on how to apply for either a visa or a residence permit for Austria.
Holders of British passports do not need a visa for Austria. There are no restrictions on the remaining validity of your passport, providing you leave Austria before its expiry date.
Please note that holders of an EEA (EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or Swiss passport do not require a visa.
Holders of all other passports, please check under the relevant sub-section on the left.
Spouse/dependant of EU/EEA nationals:
You will NOT need a visa to visit Austria for a maximum of 90 days, if you are:
- A family member of an EU/EEA national
- AND if you hold a British "Residence Card of a Family Member of an EEA National" according to EU Directive 2004/38/EC with a validity of 5 years (see example of specific "Residence Documentation" here)
- AND if you are travelling together with the EU/EEA national.

Please note that applications from non-UK residents (UK tourist/business or C visa) will not be accepted.

How to Schedule a Visa Appointment
The Austrian Embassy does have a telephone-based appointment scheduling system for Visa and Residence Permits.
The service is available via a local UK number 020 300 259 36 and a local Austrian number 0043 1 229 7210. Operating hours for the Visa Information Service are Monday to Friday 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. In order to access the service you need a credit card, which will be charged with the equivalent of 12,50 Euros for the call. Information is available in English and German.
The Visa Information Service is operated on behalf of the Austrian Foreign Ministry by CSC.
Applicants who do not wish to make use of this service will be able to make appointments directly at the Austrian Embassy on Wednesdays between 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm. THIS WILL BE FOR SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT ONLY. Pleae bring your passport. We will not process applications on Wednesdays afternoon. Please be advised that by coming to the Embassy directly rather than contacting the Visa Information Service you might encounter longer waiting times in securing an appointment.
Opening hours of Visa Department (for appointment holders only)
Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 12.00 am, closed on Austrian Public Holidays/Bank Holidays. Please be aware that you will only be seen with a valid appointment.
