Professional Development Hours
About PDHs Licensed engineers, on a voluntary or mandated basis, attend continuing professional education for licensure renewal to ensure competency. Continuing professional education for licensed engineers is measured in Professional Development Hours (PDH). A PDH is one contact hour of instruction or presentation. The licensee is responsible for maintaining records to be used to support credits claimed. Currently over 50% of states mandate continuing education competency for licensed engineers. According to the National Society of Professional Engineers, one acceptable activity to earn PDHs is attending continuing education courses. Any SAE Professional Development seminar qualifies as an acceptable activity. Each SAE Professional Development seminar grants attendees with a measure of credit called Continuing Education Units (CEU). See the seminar course description for the number of CEUs earned for completing a particular seminar. SAE Professional Development is approved as an Authorized Provider of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and grants IACET CEUs for its continuing education seminars. 1 Continuing Education Unit = 10 PDHs
Licensees should look into their state's requirements. For example, five states (New York, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Oklahoma) require pre-approval of PDH sponsors. In the instance of New York State, SAE is a New York State approved PDH sponsor by virtue of its IACET Authorized Provider status. For more information:
