2009 SAE/IMechE Vehicle Thermal Management Systems Conference (VTMS)September 29 - October 1, 2009 Renaissance Phoenix Glendale Hotel Phoenix, Arizona, USA Call for Papers & Online Abstract Submittal This meeting is a joint venture between SAE International, by the members of the Thermal Management Activity; and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) of the UK. The subject is heat transfer technology. The meeting is held every two years in odd numbered years with the lead organization alternating between SAE and IMechE. SAE organized the first event in 1993 and IMechE held their last one in May of 2007. With fuels economy and emission regulations still leading factors in the automotive industry and, more recently, the quest for a global coolant, the continuation of the event is justified. While Europe has been pushing for CO2 and the U.S. preferring a coolant more similar to R134a, all OEMs recognize that it will be much easier to market their vehicles to the globe if a common coolant is chosen. Different systems will not have to be designed for different regions of the world if one coolant can meet all the emission regulations. This, of course, will be a cost savings. In the meantime, designers have to be prepared for whatever choice(s) is made. Optimizing the sizes and shapes of the modules to fit under engine compartments is one consideration in these designs while minimizing the weights of the components is another, in order to benefit fuel economy.
