The Introduction of Fuel Cell Hybrid Systems in
On- and Off-Road Mobility Applications
Abstract
While the major automotive OEMs are targeting the introduction of commercial fuel cell vehicles soon after 2010, many off-road mobility OEMs are preparing to introduce fuel cell powered products into their industrial applications much sooner. One of the key enablers of this product introduction is fuel cell hybrid electric technology, which provides improved fuel efficiency, range and performance, while reducing system costs.
Joe Cargnelli, Chief Technology Officer at Hydrogenics Corporation, will describe the fuel cell and hybrid technology being developed to address early mobility applications, including:
- the current state of the technology,
- the benefits fuel cell propulsion solutions provide,
- the opportunities that remain to improve the technology and accelerate adoption, and
- Hydrogenics' experience in integrating its fuel cells into over 25 mobility applications with its partners.
BIOGRAPHY
Joseph Cargnelli is one Hydrogenics' original founders and has served as a director since January 1996. Joe was appointed Vice President, Technology in July 2000 and Chief Technology Officer in 2003. Joe applies a hands-on approach to engineering, combining this with his dedication to finding the most efficient and effective engineering solutions across Hydrogenics' full technology spectrum. Joe earned a Master's degree in Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto, where he also received a Bachelor's in the same field. From April 1992 to April 1993, Joe served as a Research Engineer with the Laboratory of Advanced Concepts in Energy Conversion Inc., a laboratory engaged in the research, development and demonstration of alkaline fuel cells and hydrogen storage methods.
