The European Commission on Oct. 28 published a proposal to limit CO2 emissions from light trucks and vans. According to InterRegs, an online resource for global vehicle safety and emissions regulations, the proposed regulation follows the same format as EC Regulation No. 443/2009 on passenger car CO2 emissions. It proposes an average per-vehicle limit of 175 g/km. Compliance would be phased in between 2014 and 2016: 75% of each manufacturer’s vehicles must comply in 2014, 80% in 2015, and 100% in 2016. As with the passenger car CO2 regulation, excess emissions premiums are levied for noncompliance and additional credits are available for vehicles with emissions of less than 50 g/km. The proposal includes a long-term emissions target of 135 g/km by 2020.
