The ION from FARO Technologies is the company’s large-volume laser tracker. According to the company, the 3-D measurement system is the most accurate laser tracker available based on the most common types of measurement applications. Featuring a longer measurement range and lighter weight, the ION contains the sophisticated agile absolute distance meter (aADM). The ION, says FARO, is the only ADM system on the market that is fast enough to allow for high-density scanning without relying on an interferometer (IFM). Because agile ADM is more simplified than the technology used in other laser trackers, there is no need to switch between ADM- and IFM-based systems. The ION has improved volumetric accuracy by 27% over the previous model to 0.002 in (0.049 mm) at 33 ft (10 m). The measurement diameter range has been extended 36% to 361 ft (110 m), and the weight has decreased 12% to 39 lb (17.7 kg).
