Collier Research has released an interface between its HyperSizer structural sizing software and Abaqus FEA from Dassault Systèmes’ Simulia brand that it claims streamlines the composite design optimization process. An iterative process that begins with the transfer of data from Abaqus’ initial model to HyperSizer continues until a convergence of internal load paths is reached. The technology was used to design several of NASA’s composite structures on the Ares V space launch vehicle—a good example being its payload shroud structure, which during flight separates into four petals to release the lunar lander. In the design of this structure, the aerodynamic pressure on the shroud is resolved into internally distributed forces. Abaqus determines the load path/direction and how much load is in the stiffened panel and ring frame; HyperSizer then analyzes the panels’ cross-sectional dimensions and layups to the Abaqus computed load. The partnership between Collier Research and Simulia is targeting the energy industry and others in addition to aerospace.

Collier Research, Simulia optimize composite design for Ares V

NASA Ares V composite shroud structural components displaying HyperSizer optimization zones. The software “sizes” a design by surveying millions of candidate dimensions and laminates, in a feedback loop with FEA, identifying the optimum variables down to the ply level in just minutes.
