A carbon composite tape made with Fortron polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) engineering thermoplastic from Ticona Engineering Polymers is adding strength and taking mass out of braided fabric preforms manufactured by A&P Technology Inc. for advanced aircraft interior applications. Fortron PPS can be molded in minutes, instead of the lengthier times required with a thermoset, making it suitable for use with rapid manufacturing processing. Fortron linear PPS is a semicrystalline polymer featuring performance up to 240°C; resistance to aircraft and automotive fuels, oils, solvents, and anti-icing agents; and good hardness, stiffness, and dimensional stability. In addition, its flame resistance meets flame, smoke, and toxicity requirements for aircraft interiors.
