VanDyne SuperTurbo Inc. has successfully completed Phase I of the U.S. Army SBIR Program and recently signed a contract to commence Phase II of the program, which is valued at $727,000. Phase II involves the delivery of a SuperTurbo prototype for testing at the Army Tank and Automotive Command Center in the second quarter of 2012. During Phase I of the program, modeling and simulation proved that the SuperTurbo delivered on the promised 6% efficiency gains when used in place of the current turbochargers on the Army Heavy Equipment Transport System. If awarded Phase 3, the company will be asked to deliver an on-vehicle demonstrator, followed by a retrofit program for the Army. VanDyne is collaborating with Caterpillar, which is a sub-awardee within this contract. In addition to these SBIR grants for the Army, VanDyne within the past year has won a National Science Foundation SBIR Phase I award, as well as a Department of Energy grant under the SuperTruck program as a subcontractor to Cummins.
