Torotrak has partnered with Allison Transmission to develop a medium-duty truck transmission that will feature Torotrak's full-toroidal transmission technology, which provides the ratio range not through a system of gears but by a full-toroidal variator that consists of a set of discs and rollers, making the infinitely variable transmission torque-controlled rather than ratio- controlled. Disc and roller technology offers improved fuel-saving, emissions, and refinement benefits for commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction vehicles, and material-handling equipment, according to the company. Its flywheel- and continuously variable transmission-based mechanical hybrid for city bus and commercial vehicle applications also offers various fuel economy savings and an improved riding experience.
