Denso's new millimeter-wave radar offers a longer and wider detection range that helps improve the responsiveness of active safety technologies such as precrash safety (PCS) and adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems. According to Denso, the multizone radar is lower in cost due to improved material selection and also is approximately the same size as the company’s previous model. The radar has a detection distance of 205 m (673 ft) and a ±18° detection radius within a distance of 35 m (115 ft) from the vehicle as compared to 151 m (495 ft) and ±10° in the conventional product. To achieve a longer detection distance, Denso engineers improved the electronic circuit design in a way that reduces electromagnetic interference that could limit the receiver’s detection of reflected radio waves. This longer detection range enables ACC-equipped vehicles to maintain a safe and constant distance to the vehicles in front of them—even when traveling at higher speeds.
