ZF explores composites for lightweight truck-chassis design

05-Dec-2012 21:45 GMT
Along with optimized design, including the integration of functions for individual components, new materials for heavy-truck applications are leading ZF’s lightweight charge. One example on display at the IAA show was a “study” of a four-point link made from glass-fiber-reinforced plastic that reduces weight by 25% compared to the standard cast component. Read full story
GM tools up for high-volume aluminum structures with new welding technology
24-Sep-2012 14:46 GMT
The process centers on a new electrode-tip design. It will enable GM’s global body shops to spot-weld virtually any combination of aluminum sheet, extrusions, and castings at higher production rates than are currently used in automotive aluminum-structures manufacturing. Read full story
Choosing the right tube joint seal for HFO-1234yf refrigerant compatibility
06-Sep-2012 15:55 GMT
One of the many system components of concern to OEMs and aftermarket service providers is the elastomeric seals used at the different joints in automotive air-conditioning. One critical aspect of seal performance is permeation, and the material compatibility issues likely to arise in relation to it, due to the new refrigeration chemistry. Read full story
Lightweight sandwich structures for EV chassis
04-Sep-2012 18:13 GMT
Plastic foam-core/aluminum-skin sandwich components developed by Inrekor in collaboration with JSP cut the weight of a prototype EV chassis by 30%. Read full story
Materials lead the way to vehicle mass reduction
30-Aug-2012 21:25 GMT
Reducing a vehicle's mass opens the door for a downsized engine and transmission, a lighter cradle and body structure, smaller wheels and brakes, as well as a weight-slimmed suspension. The start point for this ripple effect is materials. Read full story
Video: AHSS structures save lives, pose challenges to first responders
20-Aug-2012 16:50 GMT
Ron Moore, retired Division Chief of the McKinney (TX) Fire Department, has literally written the book on extrication involving vehicles with advanced high-strength steel structures, and he shared some of the challenges of this practice at the Great Designs in Steel seminar in Livonia, MI. ContiTech air springs with plastic piston save weight, increase ride comfort
03-Aug-2012 14:08 GMT
The supplier claims that up to 75% of the weight of conventional steel pistons is saved thanks to the use of plastic and a new simulation method. The end result is a potential weight reduction of up to 12 kg (27 lb) per axle. Read full story
Galvanic corrosion modeling for aircraft environments
09-Jul-2012 21:01 GMT
Galvanic corrosion in aircraft is important as it occurs whenever dissimilar metals or certain types of composites are joined or are located close to each other. SICOM, a recent project involving Airbus, EADS, BEASY, and a number of research centers, investigated how the “find it and fix it” approach can be replaced by a more fundamental approach based on computer modeling. Noise-damping lubricants control NVH, improve perceived vehicle quality
11-Jun-2012 14:56 GMT
Less noise and more smoothness are important design attributes for operators of most every type of vehicle, including passenger vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles, and off-road equipment. Synthetic noise-damping lubricants such as the Molykote brand solutions from Dow Corning can be economical, long-lasting answers to achieve these attributes in powertrain, body, chassis, and interior applications.
